Do you see a pattern emerging here…

Since this is still an artblog, let’s art!

Style magazines and promoshoots are a valuable resource for great poses. I’m still having a hard time figuring them out without an example.

Secret heat

I loathe bars. I realize that that is a bold statement, but I hope this is a crowd which will readily accept such declarations. You will only see me in a bar or club on rare occasions, the reasons being plentiful. I am aware many people extract joy from hanging around a hot and cramped establishment, with lots of smoking involved that oozes into your clothing and saturates your hair so that your bed stinks of it the morning after, gulping down a range of alchoholic beverages that slowly screw up your brain (depending on your rate of consumption ofcourse), trying desperately to court eachother over the earshattering music installation. There are exceptions ofcourse, like cozy Irish pubs with pooltables and the like, but this practice generally holds very little appeal to me.

Secondly, I am not a big fan of alchohol. It’s not a matter of learning to like it either. While I have become more tolerant of regular beer, I just happen to think it’s genuinely not pleasant to drink. I’m more of a soda man myself, and undoubtedly my many years of intense coke consumption have not done much to dissuade me from that preference. Hence I usually resort to various mixed drinks, which my friends often refer to as ‘pussydrinks’ for what I hope are obvious reasons.

But when presented with the right kind of argumentation or an invitation to ones birthday, I am content to temporarily suspend these aversions to take them up on their offer. For besides the alchoholism, there are always fun times to be had. Also, there is no better time to enjoy a shoarma sandwich than after midnight. And so it was that we headed into town after seeing Disturbia last night, stopping by said Irish pub, and incidentally stumbling across a rare oppurtunity for great personal gain. I will discuss the specifics in detail soon, but right now that’s a piece of heat I have to keep to myself.

Marooned

As I type this my clock mockingly flashes the numbers 02:00 at me. I got home about an hour ago after a trip to Amsterdam with a bunch of my classmates. A girlfriend was celebrating her birthday today (or yesterday, technically), so we all went to see The Bourne Ultimatum. Smashing flic. Job well done. Fun fact though: I left there at 9. Given, it’s a fair distance from Amsterdam to my town, but the lengthy duration of our trip was sort of our own fault.

Me and a mate left early because we realized we had a long trip ahead of us. We took the tram back to Central, then grabbed the train back to Hilversum. What we failed to realize was that we had to make a switch halfway down the track. This became clear to us when we ended up in Lelystad, which is like massive miles in the wrong direction. So we had to backtrack and hop over to the right train this time. Once in Hilversum I had to take anĂ³ther train back to Utrecht, and then take the bus back home.

Long story short: gamers rule, trains suck.

And that brings us to the now, where I am going to sleep.

Toodles.

I can has pictures?

Short answer: Yes.

I’ve been bringing my new Cybershot to school with me (as if lugging my heavy laptop around wasn’t enough), so I’m shooting snaps left and right. Here’s a little selection for your viewing displeasure(about the fact you didn’t go to a college as cool as THIS ONE!)

These 3 are from introduction camp a few weeks ago. We had a great time hanging out,

playing games,

quaffing beverages and enjoying the ’scenery’. And I even met the Dutch Hyde (That 70’s Show, dontchaknow) in the process.

Here’s a few more snaps of my fellow students fooling around in our building.

Working on our first project in a lounge corner.

Arthur, Bram and Jesus(aka Marc) playing some Smash Melee.

Class hanging out in the ’stardock’(those XPS’es do kinda look like spaceships, don’t they?), waiting for the power to come back on after the second outing in half an hour…

Paul and Eric demonstrating the classic Japanese schoolgirl pose.

More coming soon.

What there is up

As you may know I started the Game Design and Development course at the HKU college a few weeks ago. Think what you may, but games are big business and frankly I can’t think of anything I’d like to be involved in more. I’ve been having a blast so far, we’ve got a great group of creative minds and we get to think, talk, learn and play games all day. We get classes on all that basic jazz, and there’s a special chill room on ‘our’ floor with a couple of big sofas, some HDtv’s and a bunch of consoles. It doesn’t really feel like school at all.

On Monday morning, we get lessons in seperating design and content, as you would with HTML and CSS, so we’re building a website this term; Tuesday’s is Project day, where we get together and storm some brains abut what interactive application we’ll be building; Wednesday we do some Research and afterwards a bit of Pixel Art; Thursday’s we get to sleep late and come in for some Coding and Art Class; and Friday we tackle Interaction Theory, which basically means doing fun experiments and looking at optical illusions and crazy designs with a man who looks strikingly much like a character I designed. Inbetween we run around town sometimes, and ofcourse play games, and that’s basically it!

I’ll post some pictures soon.
